Are There Angels Among Us?

Published: December 23, 2025

Angels are a fascinating part of God’s creation—powerful spiritual beings sent to carry out His will. Throughout Scripture, we see them delivering messages, offering protection, and even waging spiritual battles. But do angels still walk among us today? Are they watching over us, intervening in our lives, or even appearing in human form?

Hebrews 13:2 reminds us that some have entertained angels without realizing it, sparking the question: Could that still happen today? Let’s explore if angels are among us and whether they still play an active role in our world today.

What Does the Bible Say About Angels Among Us?

One very popular Bible verse about angels among us is Hebrews 13:2. It offers a thought-provoking reminder:

"Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers; for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it."

Here, the author of Hebrews encourages believers to extend kindness to strangers, highlighting an extraordinary possibility—some who appear to be ordinary people may, in fact, be angels in disguise. This verse suggests that God’s “heavenly messengers” can take on human form, carrying out His purposes in ways we may not immediately recognize.

But is the idea of angels walking among us supported in other areas of Scripture? Let’s take a look…

Angels in the Old Testament

The Old Testament contains many Bible verses about angels that reveal their role in God’s divine plan.

According to Job 38:4-7, angels rejoiced as God laid the foundations of the earth, indicating they were created before humanity. Hebrews 1:14 further reveals that angels are ‘ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation,’ showing that God uses them to fulfill His purposes.

Angels seem to be individual spiritual beings. Some have names, such as Gabriel and Michael, but each has different responsibilities within the angelic hierarchy.

In the Old Testament, angelic visitations and interactions with humans are common. Angels often deliver important revelations and guidance to people. In the book of Genesis, angels appear to Abraham and Sarah, foretelling the birth of their son Isaac. In the book of Daniel, the prophet receives visions and interpretations from the angel Gabriel that provide insight into future events.

One notable instance is the story of Jacob’s ladder in Genesis 28:12, where Jacob dreams of a stairway to heaven with angels ascending and descending on it. This vivid imagery illustrates the connection between heaven and earth facilitated by angels, highlighting their role as intermediaries between the divine realm and humanity.

Angels in the New Testament

Similarly, Bible verses about angels in the New Testament show them as active participants in God’s plan of redemption. In Luke 1:26–38, the angel Gabriel announces Jesus’s birth, while in Matthew 4:11 and Mark 1:13, angels minister to Jesus in the wilderness. These passages highlight the important role angels play in Christ’s life and ministry, carrying out God’s will.

In Luke 2:10–12, we read of the angels who appeared to the shepherds, proclaiming the good news of Jesus’s birth: “But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.’” This divine proclamation emphasizes the pivotal role of angels in announcing the arrival of the Messiah.

Throughout the book of Acts, angels play a role in the lives of the apostles, delivering them from prison and providing guidance. Angels are sometimes referred to as “sons of God” in the Bible as well.

According to 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18, angels will play a vital role in shepherding believers to heaven at the time of Jesus’s second coming.

What Does Jesus Say About Angels?

Jesus affirms the reality of angels and their involvement in the lives of believers. In Matthew 18:10, he speaks of guardian angels assigned to protect God’s children: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.” This statement underscores the care and protection provided by angels to those who belong to God.

Are There Angels Among Us Today?

The question of whether angels walk among us today continues to captivate human curiosity. While angelic encounters may not always be obvious, many people report experiences that suggest the presence of angels in their lives.

Just like the Bible describes in multiple places, angels can manifest as ordinary individuals, providing comfort, guidance, and assistance when needed most. There’s no reason to believe this isn’t true today.

Missionaries working in remote or dangerous areas have shared accounts of being protected by unseen forces or encountering strangers who provided crucial aid—only to vanish without a trace. Others describe moments of divine intervention or protection that seem too extraordinary to be coincidence. While these encounters may vary in nature and intensity, they serve as reminders of the mysterious ways in which God sends his messengers to operate in both the spiritual and physical realms.

Are Angels Around Us, Guiding and Protecting Us?

Many people believe that angels are indeed present in our lives, offering guidance, protection, and comfort in times of trouble. Whether it’s a near-miss accident, a sudden intuition, or a chance encounter with a stranger who offers just the right words of encouragement, these experiences are often interpreted as signs of angelic intervention.

Psalms 34 and 91 seem to affirm this belief as they speak of angels “delivering” believers and “guarding you in all your ways.”

How Do Angels Walk Among Us?

While angels may not always manifest in visible form, believers often sense their presence through subtle signs and divinely orchestrated moments. Some people report feeling a sense of peace or warmth during difficult times, attributing these feelings to angelic influence. Others recount stories of unexplained phenomena or mysterious strangers who appear at just the right moment, leaving a lasting impression.

How do angels interact with humans if they’re spiritual beings? Nobody knows for sure. Reasons to Believe founder Dr. Hugh Ross explains that angels reside in a different dimensional realm.

Do Angels Respect Our Free Will While Demons (Fallen Angels) Try to Harm/Possess Us?

In Christian theology, angels are believed to respect human free will, offering guidance and assistance, but never forcing their will upon us. On the other hand, demons or fallen angels are said to seek to deceive and harm humanity, tempting individuals away from God’s will. While angels may offer protection and guidance, ultimately, the choice to accept or reject their assistance lies with each individual.

Well-known Christian author C. S. Lewis warns believers to be careful concerning any type of fascination with the enemy.

“There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.”

While the concept of angels among us may spark wonder and curiosity, it’s essential to remember that the most profound presence in our lives is the Holy Spirit within us. Angels may offer guidance and protection, but it’s the indwelling presence of God’s Spirit that provides us with strength, wisdom, and comfort in all circumstances.

So, as we navigate the complexities of life, let’s remain open to the possibility of angelic encounters while trusting in the abiding presence of the divine within us.
