Question of the Week: If you could say just one thing to an atheist to show that God is real, what would you say?
My Answer: It depends on the atheist, specifically on why this person identifies as an atheist. I would first ask questions to learn more about his or her background. What I hear would influence my response by giving me clues about how to respond in a most helpful way. I’d have a clue what kind of evidence would be most impactful, or at least less likely to be dismissed out of hand.
Often, at least for me, it means presenting at least one piece of evidence from the book of nature, such as the discovery of a cosmic beginning or the improbable event that led to formation of the Earth and Moon. I would try to find out whether science evidence or some more personal issue is what he or she needs to consider. Once the person accepts that trustworthy evidence for a personal, loving God can be found, I would ask him or her to carefully examine the historical evidence for the deity of Jesus of Nazareth and for his bodily resurrection from the dead.
