Does the Bible Say Pillars Hold Up the Earth?

by Hugh Ross
March 11, 2022

Question of the week: Does the Bible teach that pillars hold up the Earth (Psalm 75:3)?

My answer: The Hebrew word for “pillar,” ammud, has a broad definition. It can mean a column, a pillar, or any kind of supporting structure. Note, too, that the context of Psalm 75:3 is earthquakes. I believe the best interpretation of Psalm 75:3 is that it states that destructive earthquakes will happen, but when they do happen, Earth possesses the internal structures that guarantee it will not fall apart.

I briefly describe how Earth’s earthquakes are fine-tuned to make advanced life possible in my book, More Than a Theory. A much more detailed and up-to-date description will appear in my next book, Designed to the Core, with a scheduled release date of July 2022.
