Where Science and Faith Converge
  • Signature of the Universe’s First Stars and Dark Matter

    March 19, 2018

If you are familiar with the legends of King Arthur or the famous Monty Python movie that spoofed those legends, the holy grail is a cup or vessel with miraculous powers that gallant knights would spend decades in their fruitless quests to find. In science, the term “Holy Grail” is used for a difficult-to-achieve potential discovery of great significance.

How often have we heard the phrase that something will not happen until hell freezes over? The phrase is always used to refer to things that are impossible.

A lot of people today worry about the carbon footprints of nations, industries, technologies, and even individual human beings and animals. They worry that our activities are pumping too much carbon in the form of carbon dioxide and methane— both powerful greenhouse gases—into the atmosphere and too much carbon in the form of tiny particles of soot onto glaciers and snowfields. They worry that these activities are warming our planet and raising our sea levels.

The ultimate Hollywood disaster movie would portray the catastrophic consequences of a nearby supernova eruption. If one were to occur within 1,000 light-years of Earth, it would be the end of civilization as we presently enjoy. A supernova eruption closer than 100 light-years from Earth would bring devastating health consequences for human beings.

  • Happy Valentine’s Day from Your Creator

    February 12, 2018

The whole universe and everything within it is God’s special love letter to you, me, and every other member of the human race. I have written about these love letters in previous web articles and in my book, Improbable Planet.1 Here are a few of my favorites with brief descriptions (most of the photos come from my nature excursions) and links for those of you who want to explore more fully the depths of God’s love:

Many eyes were trained toward the night skies with the recent, rare, super blue blood Moon. While such spectacular events in the solar system provide joy for laypeople, astronomers seek to find similar features—beginning with finding a moon—outside the solar system in ongoing efforts to detect conditions for life elsewhere.

    January 29, 2018

The observation of repeated occurrences of convergence in the history of Earth’s life stands as a profound challenge to naturalistic explanations for Earth’s life.1 Now, another recently recognized and especially dramatic occurrence of convergence2 provides yet another challenge to naturalism and support for the biblical creation model of life.

  • More Evidence for God as Dark Matter Confirmation Nears

    January 22, 2018

A crucial component of the big bang creation model that the Bible uniquely predicted thousands of years ago1 is the existence of a lot of cold dark matter. Cold dark matter refers to the matter in the universe that is comprised of massive particles that either interact very weakly with light—that is, photons—or not at all. These particles contrast with baryonic matter, which is made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons that possess the property of strongly interacting with light.

  • Responding to Naturalistic Explanations for Life’s History on Earth

    January 15, 2018

Many people are convinced that naturalistic explanations are adequate, by themselves, to explain the entire history of life on Earth. How do believers in the God of the Bible persuade these folks that God must have taken a very significant role in shaping the history of life?

  • Merry Christmas

    December 24, 2017

I grew up in Canada during the 1950s and 1960s. A Christmas tradition during that time in Canada for both Christians and non-Christians was to sing Christmas carols on Christmas Eve. Thus, though I was not raised in a Christian home, every Christmas Eve I was exposed to the rich Christian doctrines that are present in the lyrics of so many Christmas carols.

On December 14, NASA and Google announced the discovery of an eighth planet orbiting the star Kepler 90. Other media outlets picked up the hype from there, with teasers like “first solar system like ours” and “boosting the chances of finding alien life elsewhere in the universe.” What’s the stir about?

The planets in the solar system are a diverse lot. A new study indicates that extrasolar planetary systems are not. The eight planets in the solar system range in size from 3,400 miles in diameter (Mercury) to 86,882 miles in diameter (Jupiter). The mass range is much more dramatic, from 0.055 times Earth’s mass (Mercury) to 318 times Earth’s mass (Jupiter). Densities range from 0.687 times that of liquid water (Saturn) to 5.514 times that of liquid water (Earth).

  • Comments on Four Views on Creation, Evolution, and Intelligent Design

    December 4, 2017

The Counterpoints series produced by Zondervan Publishing “provides a forum for the comparison and critique of different views on issues important to Christians.”1 Notable theologian Stanley Gundry is the series editor. The format for each book in the series is for three or four Christian leaders or scholars who are divided on an important Christian issue to each write an essay where they explain their position and briefly describe what they believe to be the best evidences for their position. Each essay is followed by responses from the other essayists and a brief rejoinder.

This week, the book Theistic Evolution: A Scientific, Philosophical, and Theological Critique, edited by J.P. Moreland, Stephen Meyer, Christopher Shaw, Ann Gauger, and Wayne Grudem, will be released by Crossway.1 The 1,007-page-long book has been widely touted as the definitive refutation of theistic evolution and evolutionary creationism. The statement on the book’s back cover makes the bold claim that it is “the most comprehensive critique of theistic evolution yet produced.”

As I explained, it is not so bad because our Creator placed us on Earth at the one precise moment in the Sun’s history when its flaring activity is at rock bottom.
