He then studied the integrase protein of the HIV virus at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California. After a visiting professorship at the Claremont Colleges in Claremont, California, Erik worked as a scientist at a clinical laboratory, Quest Diagnostics, where he developed novel tests for the detection of infectious agents like avian influenza, tuberculosis, and HIV.
