  • TNRTB Classic: The Solar System’s Super Design

    September 6, 2012

Earlier this week, I wrote about a new study on the Sun’s probable birth cluster. This study has helped to resolve the contradictions concerning the size of the Sun’s birth cluster and, more specifically, has revealed a far more powerful argument for super-intelligent design of the solar system.

For the last two decades astronomers have been struck by an apparent contradiction in the Sun’s birth. The abundance of heavy elements and certain radiometric isotopes in Earth’s crust, Earth’s interior, and primitive meteorites is so high as to imply that the Sun must have been born in a star cluster (see figure below) with at least 10,000 member stars.

  • TNRTB Classic: Imitating Nature

    August 30, 2012

As a frequent reader of scientific literature, I often come across articles highlighting the innovations derived from biological organisms. The growing discipline of biomimetics testifies to this trend. One example I described earlier shows how studies of shrimp eyes inspire scientists to create better optical devices. The fact that scientists gain technological insight from biology makes the most sense if there is a Creator who fashioned and sustains all life present on Earth.

As the wise Yoda once said, “Always two there are, a master and an apprentice.” The master teaches and models; the apprentice learns and emulates. The more the apprentice studies the master’s work, in order to learn the techniques and apply them in other situations, the quicker the skills of the apprentice grow. Regarding technological advance, biological systems provide stunning designs for the apprentice to emulate. Consider these examples.

    August 23, 2012

A few days ago, I discussed the implications of a paper displaying the critical importance of a late stage of terrestrial (rocky) planet formation for life on Earth. This study adds to the continuous evidential findings of our planet’s rare ability to support advanced life. Not only did God uniquely create Earth, he fine-tuned the formation of our entire solar system to make human existence possible.

Good mental health critically depends on the recognition of self-worth. Self-worth comes from the discovery that one is uniquely designed to fulfill a specific and valuable purpose. Recognition that each human being is distinctly special represents a strong argument for the existence of a powerful, intelligent, knowledgeable, and loving Creator.

A few days ago I wrote about the molecular rotary motor F1-F0-ATPase, arguing that its supramolecular architecture and operation bear an uncanny similarity to a man-made machine. This similarity revitalizes the Watchmaker argument for God’s existence.

I don’t like to be criticized—not. one. bit. But if I am honest with myself, there is almost always some measure of validity to the critical comments directed my way.

  • TNRTB Classic: Creation Calculations

    August 9, 2012

For the past couple of weeks we have examined some of the problems using biblical genealogies to calculate a date for creation. A careful review of the stories of Noah, Abraham, and Moses– along with other scriptures–demonstrates that the Hebrew word yālad has a much more complex meaning than its common translation as “begat.” This provides strong evidence for gaps in the Genesis genealogies and makes calculating an accurate timeline for creation a futile task.

    August 6, 2012

We conclude this series on gaps in Scripture’s genealogical records by analyzing the passages in Genesis that are most critical to calculations of a 6,000-year-old universe by biblical date-setters such as Bishop James Ussher. Widespread evangelical adherence to Ussher’s calculations has helped erect an artificial bulwark between the Bible and science, but we show that the flexibility and ambiguity of biblical Hebrew makes it impossible to calculate an accurate creation timeline using the Bible’s genealogies.

As we continue examining the genealogies in Mosaic literature, we see that the story of Abraham supports the idea that the familial relationships described in the Old Testament are not always as clear-cut as they may appear, hence supporting the idea of genealogical gaps.

Young-earth creationists generally affirm the reliability of carbon-14 methods for biblical artifacts dating back to the time of Noah’s flood. At that point, however, they suggest the physical world dramatically changed, thereby rendering the results of carbon-14 and related radiometric methods as unreliable.3 This belief necessitates a reinterpretation of a vast amount of data into a highly compressed timeframe.

Would you trust a dating technique that said living mollusks had shells 2,300 years old, or worse, 27,000 years? What if that same technique yielded dates for Triassic wood (when the dinosaurs lived) at 34,000 years and dated millions-of-years-old coal, oil, and even diamonds at less than 100,000 years?

We continue this series on gaps in Scripture’s genealogical records by looking at the legacy of Noah and his sons. In particular, this story introduces a hermeneutical problem that arises because of the way date-setters (those who attempt to calculate a creation date based on biblical genealogies) interpret a key Hebrew word.

Biblical genealogies have often been used to attempt to calculate a date for creation which is then cited as support for a young Earth. However, closer examination of the ancient Hebrew reveals evidence for gaps in these genealogies, making them unsuitable for such calculations. The story of Moses, in particular, demonstrates just such a gap.

“Missing Link Connects Dinosaurs, Birds,"1 trumpeted newspaper headlines around the world this summer. The excitement stirred by a June 23 press conference at the National Geographic Society in our nation's capitol proved contagious. No wonder. The rhetoric was anything but objective and cautious as an international team of paleontologists announced the discovery of two fossilized specimens of feathered dinosaurs in China’s Liaoning province.2, 3 Philip Currie, curator of dinosaurs at the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology in Drumheller, Alberta, declared, "Dinosaurs did not become extinct. In fact, they are alive and well and represented by over 10,000 species of birds."3 Mark Norell, from the American Museum of Natural History, expressed similar exuberance: "Evidence indicating that birds are derived from dinosaurs is absolutely overwhelming."4 U. C. Berkeley paleontologist Kevin Padian said the discovery "should lay to rest any remaining doubts that birds evolved from small coelurosaurian dinosaurs."5

In the age of the Earth debate, young-earth creationists often rely on the genealogies recorded in the Bible to calculate a precise creation timeline reaching back approximately 6,000 years. But sound reasons exist for viewing these genealogies as meaningful though incomplete records. And with incomplete records, all efforts to build a creation timeline are futile.

Earlier this week, I posted a detailed review and response to John Walton’s best-selling book, The Lost World of Genesis One. For the first time, my response articulated Reason To Believe’s concordist position, one that seeks agreement between Scripture’s passages about the natural realm and indisputable science—so long as neither are compromised. We see great value in integrating science and biblical materials when appropriate, especially in educational settings. Through our efforts and research we have confidence in God’s guidance that He who inspired the Bible also created the universe and all that is in it.
