Where Science and Faith Converge

  • A Review of Evolution vs. God

    August 5, 2013

A number of Christians are promoting evangelist Ray Comfort’s new DVD, "Evolution vs. God." Although the video contains some valid content, its questionable treatment of science and scientists—with an attack mindset and a goal to make scientists look stupid—causes me to advise extreme caution. Bluntly, I see this video as counter to our evangelistic mission.

  • Book Review: Dr. Gerald Rau’s Mapping the Origins Debate, Part 2

    August 2, 2013

Despite my default skepticism when reading books (written by a single author) that claim to offer a balanced view of contentious topics within Christianity, I was pleasantly surprised by Dr. Gerald Rau’s Mapping the Origins Debate: Six Models of the Beginning of Everything.

    July 29, 2013

In this two-part series, guest writer Melissa Cain Travis reviews Mapping the Origins Debate, Dr. Gerald Rau’s attempt to help young people navigate the choppy waters of the science-faith debates. Here in part 1, Melissa begins with an overview of the book’s content.

  • Podcast Highlight: A Treasure Chest of Discoveries

    July 25, 2013

The month of July has been chock-full of scientific breakthroughs. RTB’s flagship podcast, Science News Flash (SNF), seeks to address some of these headline-grabbing discoveries and evaluate them from a Christian perspective.

Though he was a committed atheist, astronomer Sir Fred Hoyle acknowledged the appearance of design in the universe. Guest writer Don Olson demonstrates how recent research fine-tunes scientists’ understanding of Hoyle’s own discoveries—and, in doing so, reaffirms evidence for a Creator.

For close to 100 years, astronomers have sought to measure the expansion history of the universe. Among the various tools used, Type Ia supernovae exhibit extraordinary versatility because their incredible brightness means astronomers can observe them across vast distances in the universe.

Two properties make Type Ia supernovae powerful tools to map the expansion history of the universe. These supernovae are incredibly bright, making them visible from great distances across the universe. They exhibit the same intrinsic brightness so that astronomers, after making straightforward corrections, can use the measured brightness to determine a supernova’s distance.

  • Too Good to Be True: Evolution and the Origin of Bioinformation

    July 11, 2013

New work by researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology impacts one of the more popular arguments used to support the creation/intelligent design perspective: namely that it would be highly improbable for the vast amount of genetic information housed in DNA to arise through chance events. This research exposes a flaw in this argument, but I present a separate study that bolsters the creation view in a way that avoids common pitfalls.

  • Origin-of-Life Experiment: Going from Bad to Worse

    July 8, 2013

Stanley L. Miller's legendary spark-discharge experiments, conducted in the 1950s, were considered the first experimental validation of chemical evolutionary scenarios for the origin of life. But since that time a number of scientists have raised concerns that question the relevance of the Miller-Urey experiment. Things have now gone from bad to worse. New work by scientists from Japan identifies yet another problem for the Miller-Urey experiment as an explanation for life's origin.

    June 27, 2013

Guest writers John Millam, Ken Klos, and Iain D. Sommerville wrap up this seven-part series on water with a discussion of liquid water’s rarity throughout our solar system. It seems only Earth has maintained the right amount of liquid water for the support of advanced life.

  • Water: Designed for Life, Part 6 (of 7)

    June 24, 2013

Water is probably the most studied molecule in history—yet we continue to uncover more evidence that it is highly designed to support life. In part 6 of this series, guest writers John Millam, Ken Klos, and Iain D. Sommerville examine the remarkable properties of water that help hold cells together, water plants, and pump blood.
