The creation of artificial life in the lab is just around the corner. In fact, some researchers have already re-engineered a bacterium, making a novel microscopic lifeform. While such a possibility often triggers fear and trepidation (think Frankenstein!), these scientific advances actually strengthen the case for a superintelligent Designer’s involvement in creating and sustaining life on Earth. As a case in point, while the blueprint to assemble the reengineered bacterium is conceptually rather simple, the scientists invested astounding intellectual resources, time (over fifteen years), and money (roughly $40 million) in the effort to generate a synthetic version of the bacterium Mycoplasma mycoides. The investment of such enormous resources to redesign preexisting bacteria argues that the origin of life on Earth (from nonliving components) requires a far greater Designer.
