  • Did Neanderthals and Humans Interbreed?

    April 1, 2004

Despite compelling evidence,1 a minority of paleoanthropologists still believe (as do some Christians) that Neanderthals made a genetic contribution to modern humans through interbreeding. If Neanderthals interbred with modern humans, then by definition, they must be human.

  • Does Ockham's Razor Support Naturalism?

    April 1, 2004

William of Ockham (c. 1285-1349), a Franciscan monk and philosopher,1 is remembered for his principle of parsimony or simplicity, popularly called “Ockham’s Razor.” He stated that “Entities are not to be multiplied without necessity,” and “What can be done with fewer [assumptions] is done in vain with more.” In other words, when confronted with two seemingly equal explanatory hypotheses, the simplest or most economical explanation should be granted logical deference.

  • Equipped for High-Tech Society

    January 8, 2004

Human beings seem vastly "over-endowed" for hunter-gatherer or agrarian existence. For tens of thousands of years humanity carried intellectual capacities that offered no discernable advantage. From a Darwinian perspective, such capacities would be unlikely to arise and, even if they had randomly emerged, they would likely have been eliminated or minimized by natural selection. From a creation perspective, however, these special capacities make sense. They serve the highly specialized needs of a technological society, benefiting the life quality and longevity of all humanity.

  • Animal Death Prevents Ecological Meltdown

    October 2, 2003

Did animals die before the Fall? Did they kill and eat each other or drop from disease and old age? While this emotive concept troubles many Christians, a recent ecological study from Venezuela can help calm the emotion and bring insight regarding God’s original plan.

  • Time Dilation Attests Cosmic Creation Models

    October 1, 2003

The biblical creation model—starting with a universe that began transcendently, then continually expands and cools through time1 (popularly known as the big bang)—has passed yet another crucial scientific test, the time dilation test. Here’s some background: If the universe is expanding from a big bang creation event, the most distant objects observable must be moving away from Earth-bound observers at very high speed, as fast as 10 to 80 percent the velocity of light. At such speeds, according to special relativity (the familiar E=mc2), time on such bodies would run more slowly than on comparable “clocks” in Earth’s galactic neighborhood (because of the way velocity impacts the time factor).

  • Natural Evil or Moral Evil

    October 1, 2003

Why does God allow bad things to happen? How can He if He is good and all-powerful? These questions identify the “problem of evil” that for many people represents a significant challenge to God’s existence—and to personal faith.

Caltech astrophysicists Juliana Sackmann and Arnold Boothroyd have achieved a breakthrough. In spring 2003, they unveiled a new and more accurate model for the Sun’s life cycle, a model that addresses and may help resolve “the faint Sun paradox.” This new model has significant implications for God’s involvement in life’s origin on Earth—as well as for the subsequent history of life, including human life.

  • Attack the Argument, Not the Person

    October 1, 2003

General George S. Patton, Jr.’s standing order during the Second World War was to “attack, attack, attack, and, if in doubt, attack again!” That approach certainly worked well for the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. However, when it comes to logic and peacetime, the attack needs to be focused on the argument, not on the person.

  • Kids Ask the Toughest Ones

    October 1, 2003

My theologically inquisitive four-year-old stumped me with another tough one. At minimum I had to explain the doctrines of the Trinity, the Incarnation, and the Atonement. As I struggled to explain them I realized how inadequate my answers were. How do you explain the Trinity to a four-year-old (or a forty-year-old, for that matter)? I also realized that a study of these great doctrines can and should be a lifelong work.

    April 1, 2003

Atheist astrophysicist Geoffrey Burbidge once worried aloud that his peers might rush off to join "the First Church of Christ of the Big Bang."1 The rush of which he spoke was precipitated by a deluge of observational support for the big bang. Astronomers had just verified specific predictions coming from the big bang model. Today, that verification continues. The latest comes from the discovery of something called "polarized radiation" in the early universe.

    April 1, 2003

General relativity and the biblical creation model received yet another boost on January 8, 2003, at the 201st meeting of the American Astronomical Society. The boost came from an announcement of the first-ever measurement of the speed of gravity.1 Einstein’s theory says that gravity travels at roughly the same velocity as light. Physicist Sergei Kopeikin and astronomer Ed Fomalont verified (within 20 percent precision) that gravity moves through space at close to light’s speed.2 In other words, it’s in the range current big bang models predict.

  • Neanderthal-to-Human Link Severed

    April 1, 2003

Over the last five years, astonishing advances in ancient-DNA analysis have provided remarkable insight into Neanderthal genetics. As a result, the evolutionary connection between humans and Neanderthals has been severed. In other words, evolutionary biologists no longer think of Neanderthals as a transitional species linking the primitive bipedal primates, such as Homo erectus, to modern humans.

  • Logic Lessons- Keeping Your Thinking on Track

    April 1, 2003

Logic, often defined as "the principle of correct reasoning," helps to order thinking so a person can arrive at truthful, rational conclusions. Greek philosopher Aristotle (384-322 B.C.) was the first to systematize the principles of logic and referred to logic as a "tool" or "instrument" that helps one arrive at truth.

  • Gamma Rays Burst Biological Evolution

    January 1, 2003

The energy released during a gamma ray burst strains the imagination. With the power of 10 billion billion suns, gamma ray bursts are the most brilliant photon emitters in the universe. By comparison, supernovae emit (at peak) the energy equivalent of 100 billion suns. If such a gamma ray burst occurred closer than millions of light years away and lasted longer than a few minutes—or in some cases, milliseconds—humanity would be wiped out.
