Where Science and Faith Converge

Today's New Reason to Believe

Author: Hugh Ross

Reasons to Believe emerged from my passion to research, develop, and proclaim the most powerful new reasons to believe in Christ as Creator, Lord, and Savior and to use those new reasons to reach people for Christ. I also am eager to equip Christians to engage, rather than withdraw from or attack, educated non-Christians. One of the approaches I’ve developed, with the help of my RTB colleagues, is a biblical creation model that is testable, falsifiable, and predictive.

I enjoy constructively integrating all 66 books of the Bible with all the science disciplines as a way to discover and apply deeper truths. 1 Peter 3:15–16 sets my ministry goal, "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience."

I have written before about how miraculously designed our Moon is to make possible the existence of humans, advanced civilization, and certain important scientific discoveries.1 Now, new studies give us yet more reasons to thank God for the Moon.

In my previous blog post, “Bad Flare Days,” I discussed the latest research establishing how blessed we are to be orbiting a star with the least number of bad flare days, where even on its “bad” days, it is not so bad. As I explained, it is not so bad because our Creator placed us on Earth at the one precise moment in the Sun’s history when its flaring activity is at rock bottom.

Big solar flares bring spectacular aurora borealis (northern lights). In my days as the director for observations at the Vancouver chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, there were nights when the aurora was so intense and so rapidly moving that it was impossible to do any astronomical observing. We would shut down our telescopes and watch a light and color drama more spectacular than any laser show.

On October 16, the physicists and astronomers who comprise the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and the Virgo gravitational wave telescope research teams announced the detection of a fifth gravity wave event. Radio astronomer Alessandra Corsi at Texas Tech University called this detection “a big gift that nature has given us” and “a life-changing event.”

A common question that we receive at Reasons to Believe is, “Why did God create dinosaurs?” One obvious answer: God likes big animals. Consider the blue whale at up to 190 tons—more than twice as big as the largest dinosaur! As Psalm 104 describes, God has created animals in the greatest imaginable diversity. As I demonstrate in my book Improbable Planet, God has always packed Earth with as much and as diverse life as the physical conditions on Earth permitted.

Lately, I have been bombarded on my Facebook and Twitter pages with this question. It frequently comes up, too, during my radio interviews and at my speaking events. Part of the upsurge, I am sure, is due to the various Christian authors who have recently addressed this subject.

Scripture declares that God knows the number of stars in the universe and that he has assigned a name to each star (Psalm 147:4). Of those 50–60 billion trillion stars, astronomers have assigned proper names to only a few hundred.

We all learned in our junior high science classes that photons are massless. This statement has resulted in a lot of confusion for laypeople. In our junior high science classes we were also taught that photons possess energy and, thanks to Einstein’s special relativity theory, energy is equivalent to mass. ... Whenever physicists state that a photon is a massless particle, they mean that it has a “zero rest mass.”
