New Podcast Provides Antidote for Christian “Nonthinkers”

Many of today’s critics of Christianity view believers in Christ as feelers instead of thinkers. The skeptical charge is often that the faith of most Christians is grounded more in emotional experience than rational considerations. Christians are viewed as people who follow their hearts instead of their heads.

Unfortunately, too many evangelical churchgoers today lend validation to the allegation that Christians are indeed anti-intellectual. Some believers in Christ fail to appreciate the value of loving God with their entire being—and that includes God’s incredible gift of the human mind.

The United Negro College Fund’s stimulating motto is “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” Christians could further insist that a mind made in the image of an infinite, eternal, and tri-personal God is all the more a terrible thing to waste.

According to the Bible, true wisdom, knowledge, and understanding are rooted in respecting God and his revealed Word (Job 28:28; Psalm 111:10; Proverbs 1:7). Intellectual virtues such as discernment, reflection, testing, analysis, and renewing the mind are biblical mandates (Acts 17:11; Romans 12:2; 1 Corinthians 14:29; Colossians 2:8; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). Therefore, Christians’ overall devotion to the Lord should include pursuing the life of the mind to the glory of God. Using divinely bestowed faculties to think clearly and carefully about the most important issues of life pleases our Creator.

My new podcast, Imago Dei (Latin for “image of God”), which began in April 2015, is intended as an antidote for the paralysis known as “Christian nonthink.” Each episode examines critical issues through the prism of what it means to be made in the image of God. And since rational thinking is a distinctive part of being a divine image bearer, the podcast emphasizes the need for cogent reasoning and attempts to illustrate it by examining various philosophical, theological, and cultural topics with logical care.

My two valued partners on the podcast are host Joe Aguirre and physicist Dave Rogstad. The episodes run, on average, about 45 minutes and are released twice a month to RTB Monthly Partners. To join the RTB Monthly Partners program and receive the special Imago Dei podcast, contact RTB at 855-732-7667.

It is my hope that Imago Dei will help Christ’s followers become known for expressing empathy with warm hearts and thinking critically with ordered heads.
