After graduating as a Phi Beta Kappa from Emory University with a major in music, Dr. Steven Willing attended the Medical College of Georgia where he received his MD. Dr. Willing then secured an internship in pediatrics at the University of Virginia, a residency in diagnostic radiology at the Medical College of Georgia, and a fellowship in neuroradiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Willing went on to spend 20 years in academic medicine, first at the University of Louisville, followed by 9 years at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and 6 years at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). He also earned an MBA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1997.

During his academic career, Dr. Willing published over 50 papers in the areas of radiology, informatics, and management. He is the author of Atlas of Neuroradiology (W. B. Saunders, 1995) which was highly popular among radiology trainees of that decade.

After retiring from the practice of medicine in June of 2016, Dr. Willing now spends his time writing, blogging, traveling, and practicing medical mission work. His personal blog on science apologetics, The Soggy Spaniel, may be found at soggyspaniel.blogspot.com. He is hard at work on an upcoming book project titled Pride and Humility—a Biblical and Scientific Perspective
