Weeding out Evolution: Book Reviews of Icons of Evolution and Science & Christianity: Four Views

Weeding out Evolution: Book Reviews of Icons of Evolution and Science & Christianity: Four Views

Publication by Fazale Rana ( January 1, 2001 )

In Icons of Evolution Jonathan Wells convincingly demonstrates that the evidence and examples of Darwinian evolution commonly found in biology textbooks are either misleading or, in some cases, false. As a result, Icons of Evolution assumes an important role in the Creation versus Evolution debate. Less than a month after its release, Icons of Evolution was cited in a Citizen’s Appeal filed in West Virginia with the Kanawha County Board of Education (Carrie Smith, “Parent Files Complaint Over Science Textbooks,” Charleston [WV] Daily Mail, Saturday, November 18, 2000). This appeal maintains that science textbooks used in Kanawha County public schools are in violation of state law. The law mandates that science curricula must present up-to-date and accurate information.

Evolution as Mythology, Part 1 (of 5): The Theory of Evolution is a Myth

Publication by Guest Writer ( May 5, 2008 )

The creation-evolution debate is usually framed as science v. religion: verifiable fact v. faith. But we contend that it takes at least as much faith to believe in the theory of evolution as in creation by a supernatural God. And in reality, evolution has more characteristics of a “myth” than of a scientific theory.

Is “Evolution vs. God” a Genuine Science-Faith Apologetics Engagement?

Blog by Kenneth Samples ( September 10, 2013 )

Christians are divided as to how to view the broad theory of evolution. Some believers view evolution as the biological means by which God created the diverse life found on planet Earth (often called theistic evolution or evolutionary creationism). Other Christians reject the idea that human beings are the product of evolution, affirming instead some form of direct divine creation (accepting either young-earth or old-earth creationism theories).

Finding Darwin’s God: A Scientist’s Search for Common Ground between God and Evolution

Finding Darwin’s God: A Scientist’s Search for Common Ground between God and Evolution

Publication by Fazale Rana ( October 1, 2000 )

Finding Darwin’s God defends Darwinian evolution, responds to evolution’s most widely known critics, and attempts to communicate what author Ken Miller sees as a false dichotomy between evolution and traditional western monotheism. Miller, a cell biologist and professor at Brown University, has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, and co-authored widely used high school and college biology textbooks. Miller has long been active in the creation/evolution debate and is a highly vocal critic of the growing Intelligent Design movement. Because of his involvement in the Origins debate, it behooves those interested in science apologetics to become familiar with his perspective and to contemplate his ideas.

The Shell Game of Evolution and Creation

The Shell Game of Evolution and Creation

Publication by Hugh Ross ( January 1, 1987 )

The many debates, court cases, letters to the editor, and talk shows on the subject of evolution and creation almost without exception demonstrate the shell game played with the terms creationism, evolution, science, religion, and faith.

Pastors’ Views on Creation and Evolution: The Results Are In

Pastors’ Views on Creation and Evolution: The Results Are In

Blog by Guest Writer ( May 24, 2013 )

Last week Christianity Today posted an article discussing clergy and their views on origins. As the article reports, new Barna Group research (commissioned by BioLogos) “shows that a slight majority (54 percent) of Protestant pastors across all regions most likely identify with young-earth creation.” Those remaining are more likely to lean toward theistic evolution. The other two positions offered were “progressive creation” (an ambiguous term) and “uncertain” (meh).

How Not to Handle the Creation-Evolution Debate

How Not to Handle the Creation-Evolution Debate

Blog by Guest Writer ( August 8, 2013 )

A few weeks ago I found myself in a conversation with an atheist about evolution and creation. What I noticed in our interaction was that he was initially hesitant to admit his belief in evolution (and disbelief in God), and not because he was uncertain of his beliefs. Past experience taught him that identifying himself as an atheist drew a hostile response from the Christians he encountered. Their debate tactics left much to be desired, to put it mildly. It was heartbreaking to imagine this kind, intelligent person in front of me being mistreated by anyone, but particularly by those claiming to be Christian.

A Partial Review of the Book, Theistic Evolution

Blog by Hugh Ross ( November 28, 2017 )

This week, the book Theistic Evolution: A Scientific, Philosophical, and Theological Critique, edited by J.P. Moreland, Stephen Meyer, Christopher Shaw, Ann Gauger, and Wayne Grudem, will be released by Crossway.1 The 1,007-page-long book has been widely touted as the definitive refutation of theistic evolution and evolutionary creationism. The statement on the book’s back cover makes the bold claim that it is “the most comprehensive critique of theistic evolution yet produced.”

New Speciation Model Challenges Evolution, Supports Creation

Blog by Hugh Ross ( August 19, 2019 )

Which model, naturalistic evolution or supernatural creation, best explains the pattern of life’s history on Earth? If a test produces “strikingly divergent results” for the expectations of a model, what does that tell us? A new study on speciation and extinction rates provides persuasive evidence.

Sexual Reproduction Challenges Evolution, Affirms Creation

Sexual Reproduction Challenges Evolution, Affirms Creation

Blog by Guest Writer ( October 5, 2018 )

One of the greatest challenges to the theory of evolution is to explain sexuality. How could sexual reproduction have emerged by random, natural processes from early life-forms practicing asexual reproduction? How could natural selection evolve two versions of a species: essentially identical except for reproductive organs? When the data is analyzed, a creation perspective may make more sense.
