The Dazzling Perseids: Creation’s Summer Blockbuster

Publication by Hugh Ross ( July 1, 2013 )

… marks the shower’s peak, the display can also be seen a day or two before or after that date.)
The Perseid meteor shower offers a great opportunity to gather with family and friends and enjoy the cosmic show. A conversation about big issues, such as our tiny place in the vast universe, is almost inevitable when taking in the night sky. So I invite you to prepare for your own Perseid party by reading Why the Universe Is the Way It Is or by going through our small group DVD series, If God Made the Universe. (The Perseids provide …

Why Do We Have So Much (Cosmic) Stuff?

Blog by Guest Writer ( February 10, 2012 )

… of the cosmic “stuff” in the universe. (Darkness represents the remaining 99.73 percent.)
It’s no wonder, then, that skeptics question why an all-powerful God would create a universe filled with so much stuff. If His goal was to provide humanity with a home, couldn’t He have made do with less?
Let’s consider for a moment the importance of the “stuff” He created.
Here’s what the evidence says.
In Why the Universe Is the Way It Is, astronomer Hugh Ross explains that the amount of cosmic mass must be extraordinarily fine-tuned (one part in …

Just a Slow August Day

Blog by Joe Aguirre ( August 27, 2011 )

… heard from another Baker editor that the galleys for his latest book, Seven Truths that Changed the World, would be arriving soon.
A week or so before the arrival of Hugh’s book, RTB had announced the completion of a DVD, In the Days of Noah: A Deeper Look at the Genesis Flood, based on a course Hugh taught at A. W. Tozer Seminary in 2010. Another of Hugh’s books, Why the Universe Is the Way It Is, has been developed as a small-group study DVD with a slightly different name: If God Made the Universe…Why Is …

Purposeful Universe
But if God can do anything and if he truly loves us, why not create a universe where wildfires, tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, storms, tornadoes, drought, floods, etc. aren’t necessary and don’t happen? Hugh Ross outlines some insights into this philosophical dilemma in his book Why the Universe Is the Way It Is, in a chapter appropriately titled “Why Not a Perfect Universe—Now?”
To start, Hugh explains that the problem of evil, which necessitates careful contemplation, is made more troublesome by two particular misconceptions. First, people assume that God made the universe solely to provide …

An Infinity of Universes

Publication by Hugh Ross ( January 2, 2001 )

… space-time manifold of any other possibly existing universe. In other words, even if God made ten universes, one would forever lack the scientific means to detect any universe but his or her own. Thus, the sample size of universes for humans is one and it always will be just one. Therefore, the only rational option for human beings right now and at any time in the future, regardless of the speculations of theoretical physicists, philosophers, and others, is that there is only one universe and that God exquisitely designed the universe for the benefit of humanity.

Q&A: Why Would a Limitless Creator Face Trade-Offs in Biochemical Designs?

Blog by Fazale “Fuz” Rana ( February 1, 2017 )

… think that the universe made by a God who does not waver would be governed by unvarying natural laws.
Along those lines, Psalm 50:6 tells us that the “heavens declare God’s righteousness.” From my vantage point, the righteousness revealed in the heavens would be most clearly manifested through the conformity of the heavenly bodies (and all of nature, for that matter) to constant laws.
An interesting interplay of these ideas is found in Jeremiah 33:25. Here, the Lord compares the certainty of the covenant He established with His people to the “established laws of heaven and earth …

The Argument from Beauty: Can Evolution Explain Our Aesthetic Sense?

Blog by Fazale “Fuz” Rana ( May 13, 2020 )

… 1 In other words, the best explanation for the beauty in the world around us is divine agency.

Image: Richard Swinburne Credit: Wikipedia
Moreover, our response to the beauty in the world around us supports the biblical view of human nature. As human beings, why do we perceive beauty in the world? In response to this question, Swinburne asserts, “There is certainly no particular reason why, if the universe originated uncaused, psycho-physical laws . . . would bring about aesthetic sensibilities in human beings.”2 But if human beings are made in God’s image, as Scripture teaches, we should be able …

Whale Vocal Displays Make Beautiful Case for a Creator

… as a good workman, he will create a beautiful universe. On the other hand, if the universe came into existence without being created by God, there is no reason to suppose that it would be a beautiful universe.”2 In other words, the beauty in the world around us signifies the Divine.
But, as human beings, why do we perceive beauty in the world? In response to this question, Swinburne asserts, “There is certainly no particular reason why, if the universe originated uncaused, psycho-physical laws…would bring about aesthetic sensibilities in humans.”3 But, if human beings are made …

Probability War, er, Discussion cont'd

Blog by Joe Aguirre ( February 14, 2008 )

… existence is low. In fact, he argues that because the universe was made for humanity, the probability of our being here is actually quite high. He does argue, however, that if there were no God, then the probability of our being would be very, very tiny. Case in point: see the statement you quoted: Dr. Ross said that WITHOUT DIVINE MIRACLES, the probability is 10^-282, making this figure CONDITIONAL ON THERE BEING ONLY UNINTELLIGENT AND UNGUIDED PROCESSES AT WORK.
So with that in mind, I will create the setup of the problem along with some notation:
The setup is …

Does a Universe from Nothing Mean There Is No God?

Publication by Jeff Zweerink ( November 20, 2015 )

… whether God is needed to create the universe, Dr. Mir Faizal made this comment in the British news site Express, “If by God you mean a supernatural super man who breaks his own laws then yes he’s done for, you just don’t need him.”1Faizal’s comment reflects the common thought of many scientists—but can it also reveal how science supports God? Let’s look at his claim in more detail.
Faizal published a paper detailing a particular approach to quantum gravity that includes a minimum observable length. This approach leads to potential consequences in the cosmic …
