Today's New Reason to Believe

Author: Hugh Ross

Reasons to Believe emerged from my passion to research, develop, and proclaim the most powerful new reasons to believe in Christ as Creator, Lord, and Savior and to use those new reasons to reach people for Christ. I also am eager to equip Christians to engage, rather than withdraw from or attack, educated non-Christians. One of the approaches I’ve developed, with the help of my RTB colleagues, is a biblical creation model that is testable, falsifiable, and predictive.

I enjoy constructively integrating all 66 books of the Bible with all the science disciplines as a way to discover and apply deeper truths. 1 Peter 3:15–16 sets my ministry goal, "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience."

  • Did Any Other Humans Survive the Flood?

    November 9, 2016

I get many questions about Noah’s flood (see last week's blog post), and one of the most frequent questions I get asked is whether any credible Bible interpretation of the flood allows for the survival of humans who were not on board Noah’s ark. My answer depends on how the questioner defines “credible.”

  • Too Much Water Is Bad for Life!

    November 7, 2016

The mantra for the astrobiology community is “Follow the water”—for good reason. Without liquid water, there is no possibility of life. However, many in the astrobiological community take the mantra too far. They consider every planet on which there is the possibility that liquid water may exist on some part of the planet’s surface for some period in the planet’s history as habitable.

  • Does the Bible Say Noah’s Flood Was Global or Universal?

    November 2, 2016

I believe the flood of Noah was universal but not global. By universal, I mean that the entire human race and all of the nephesh (soulish) animals associated with humans were wiped out by the flood except for those humans and animals that were on board Noah’s ark.

  • Middle Ground in the Age of the Universe Debate

    October 26, 2016

As many of you are well aware, there is a fierce, seemingly never-ending debate in the Christian community over the age of the universe. For several decades now I have been at the center of this debate, having written three books,1 contributed to a debate book,2 and participated in more than a dozen public debates,3 with more books and debates sure to come.

    October 24, 2016

The most elaborate birthday celebration I ever had was the one that our Reasons to Believe staff organized for my 60th birthday. I was expecting just a token nod for having completed 60 trips around the sun. Instead, I was feted by 60 guests for several hours. The most generous comment of the night was that I had finally attained middle age since I had reached half of the biblical limit on the human life span (Genesis 6:3).

  • When Did God Create Adam and Eve?

    October 19, 2016

No matter where I speak in the world, people in my audiences press me for a precise date for God creating the first human beings, Adam and Eve. Seeing how disappointed they are when I tell them that neither the Bible nor science offers an exact date gives me some sympathy for why Archbishop James Ussher and John Lightfoot felt compelled to calculate to the day and the hour the timing of God's creation of Adam and Eve.

Three summers ago, Fazale Rana and I delivered four lectures on the Cambrian explosion to more than 40 supporters of Reasons to Believe within just a few miles of the site where the first Cambrian explosion fossils were found. As part of that conference, we visited the Mount Stephen fossil beds where the Cambrian explosion fossils were so numerous that we were forced to walk on them.

  • Binary Pulsar Affirms General Relativity and Cosmic Creation Event

    October 10, 2016

The most rigorous and compelling proof that the universe was created by an Agent that transcends space and time comes from the theory of general relativity. The best confirmation that general relativity is a true theory comes from measurements on the binary pulsar PSR B1913+16. Thanks to a new study, that best confirmation has now become even better.

In his first letter to the Thessalonians, Paul writes,1 Test everything; hold fast to what is good. Paul does not say, and nowhere in his epistles does he imply, that we are ever to hold on to the bad. But, when it comes to testing, how can we unambiguously determine what is good from what is bad?

  • Clouds Cause Problems for Extraterrestrial Life

    October 3, 2016

When I was a child, my friends and I would sometimes lie on the grass and watch billowing clouds traverse the sky. As they traversed the sky and changed shape, we would call out to one another what kinds of animals, plants, toys, machines, or symbols the shapes reminded us of. There is no doubt that Earth’s clouds are beautiful and a source of wonder and entertainment. But they are also much, much more. Our very existence depends on clouds and on our planet’s clouds being exquisitely fine-tuned.

  • How Would the Discovery of Extraterrestrial Life Affect Biblical Creation Models?

    September 28, 2016

With the recent discovery of so many “habitable” planets, I have been bombarded with questions on my Twitter page about how the discovery of extraterrestrial life would impact our biblical creation model.

  • Balancing Apologetics and Experiential Knowledge of Christ

    September 21, 2016

Apologetics and especially apologists have frequently gotten a bad reputation in the church for being all head and no heart. I often encounter this assumption when I speak, particularly when audiences learn that I was a research astronomer at Caltech and even more so when they discover that I have Asperger’s Syndrome.

  • More Evidence of Mass Extinction Event Challenging Evolutionary Models

    September 19, 2016

Mass extinction and mass speciation events are prominently featured in creation vs. evolution debates.1 Evolutionists argue that the mass extinction events were sufficiently tepid and allowed enough life-forms to survive so that they could naturally evolve during the mass speciation events occurring thereafter.

Our primary strategy at Reasons to Believe for encouraging unchurched, largely biblically illiterate adults to faith in Jesus Christ is to research and present them with new reasons to believe in Christ as Creator, Lord, and Savior from the frontiers of scientific research.

  • Answering Questions about Reincarnation

    September 8, 2016

People ask me whether or not reincarnation actually happens, why a loving God wouldn’t give people multiple chances to pass the test of life, why it matters if someone believes in reincarnation, and how I would explain people’s memories of events in “past lives” if reincarnation is not real. In this blog article, I will briefly answer these questions, but first I will explain the origin of reincarnation beliefs.

  • Why I Love Nature and Think Everyone Should Too

    September 1, 2016

Ken Samples, our staff philosopher, says he doesn’t know anyone who loves nature as much as I do. He wanted to know what it is about nature that I find so attractive and why I will go to such extreme physical means to get to beautiful natural settings. He is not alone. Hundreds of friends and strangers alike have asked me the same question.
